As dogs age, they may develop some of the same age-related ailments that humans do. One such common condition is osteoarthritis (OA), which according to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, affects a quarter of all dogs.
The primary treatment for OA, are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Although NSAIDs can provide relief, the relief can be limited and also comes with serious side effects such as chronic gastrointestinal and kidney issues. As improving quality of life and providing pain relief are key reasons pet owners seek treatment, alternative options are critical.
A recent study conducted by Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, examined the use of hemp oil CBD, or cannabidiol, in dogs with OA. The study considered 22 dogs and dosed them twice daily with hemp CBD oil. At weeks, two and four, significant improvements were noted in pain, activity, lameness and weight-bearing capacity.
